From the Globe & Mail:
CALGARY — After almost four years of “telling it like it is” – a moral code that’s attracted its fair share of controversy – the print edition of the Western Standard, the Calgary-based bastion of Albertan conservative politics, has been shut down. Publisher Ezra Levant said in an interview that while the Western Standard name will likely live on in some form on the Internet, the tough state of play facing all Canadian publishers means it’s not viable to continue the magazine in its hard-copy format.
“We weren’t near enough to being in the black to carry on, and you can’t save the world if you can’t pay the rent,” he said, adding that last-minute talks with potential rescuers had fallen through, forcing the closing to be announced Friday.
I’m going to sleep well tonight.
